The Archaeology, History and Heritage of the Dublin Mountains

The Dublin Mountains Community Archaeology Project Webinar

The Dublin Mountains encompass a wealth of geological, archaeological, natural, built and cultural heritage sites reflecting life and death over millennia of Irish history. The tale of the mountains began over 400 million years ago, and over the eons, layers and layers of stories have built up, forming peaks and valleys of triumph and tragedy as much as granite and schist. Throughout history, the mountains have witnessed stories as epic as their peaks.

The Dublin Mountains are a place soaked in stories from pretty much every era and so the webinar is a bit of a whirlwind journey through time and space. It focuses on the archaeology and built heritage, but there is also a rich seam of folklore running through the mountains that unfortunately we did not have time to cover.

This webinar, delivered by Neil Jackman and Sharon Greene, gives an overview of the archaeology and stories of the Dublin Uplands. It took place on Wednesday 02nd February 2022. This recording will be made available until late April.

This webinar is an output of the Dublin Mountains Community Archaeology Project, a new initiative from South Dublin County Council, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council and the Dublin Mountains Partnership, supported by the Heritage Council and managed by Abarta Heritage. The project looks to help by raising awareness of the wonderful stories and heritage that we have in the mountains. Through engagement with stakeholders like the National Monuments Service, Coillte, landowners and groups like Mountaineering Ireland. As well as tours, resources like information booklet on the heritage, along with videos, and interpretative signage at some of the key sites.
