Our free audiobooks on Irish history & archaeology will help you to dig deeper into the stories of Ireland.

The groundbreaking series of free audiobooks on Irish history and archaeology helps to tell the stories from Ireland’s past in a unique and accessible way. We love to delve deeply into the research to get to the heart of the information, but our mission is to also highlight the drama and tales of the past. To use an appropriately archaeological analogy, when writing our audio books the facts become the skeleton, but we then add the flesh of the story. Our narratives are historically and archaeologically accurate, but written in an entertaining and engaging way. We absolutely do not believe in dumbing anything down, instead we try to put the listener in the shoes of people’s lives in the past, by focusing on the lived experience.

Our mission is to bring the past to life, and we are keen to try new and innovative ways to engage people with the story. In a sort of aural version of an interpretative drawing, some of our audiobooks contain fictional chapters, where the life of people in the past has been recreated based on the latest discoveries and historical sources. For example, you can hear an epic tale of interconnecting lives in early medieval Ireland with our Meitheal audiobook, or hear Stories from the Grave from of a long-forgotten medieval graveyard on the outskirts of Ballyshannon in County Donegal. Other examples of our audiobooks contain more descriptive historical accounts, like the Story of the Curragh or In the Vale of Tralee.

The audiobooks are all professionally researched and written by archaeologists and historians, and they are recorded with experienced producers and sound engineers in the state of the art Bluebird Studios in County Kildare, with professional actors and voice-artists. Our Irish history audiobooks are available free to use, as they have been commissioned by national bodies or local authorities across the island of Ireland. You can learn more about our audio guide and audiobook production services here. We are proud that our acclaimed series of audio books produced for Transport Infrastructure Ireland have been chosen to form part of the remarkable National Collection of the Digital Repository of Ireland.
