Causeway Coast & Glens, Local Heritage Audit

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Museum Services on the Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Audit, a new online resource that highlights some of the wonderful heritage sites in the region.

Over the past number of months, we have been working on the Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Audit to help to highlight some of the amazing heritage and the work of committed communities across the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council region.  The overall aim of this project is to help to increase understanding and expression of the culture and history, people and places of the Causeway Coast and Glens area through museum collections, historic sites and cultural heritage using interpretation, arts and multimedia to create a peace building legacy.

There is a true wealth of heritage and history across this area. Attractions such as the Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle and Bushmills Distillery are known internationally and bring visitors from around the globe. However, there are many hidden gems in the region that often go overlooked by visitors, this project sought to identify and record these sites, and it was a joy to meet such inspirational people and to see places like Rathlin Island, Mountsandel, Dungiven Priory and to discover more about heritage towns like Ballycastle.

The particular focus of this project is on sites and places where the local community have an involvement. Community and voluntary groups have been at the forefront of efforts to create resources that highlight and celebrate the history and heritage of their localities. Amongst the initiatives spearheaded by community and voluntary groups are heritage centres and museums, heritage trails, tours by trained guides, and a wide variety of printed material ranging from books and journals to brochures and leaflets that give fascinating insights into their local culture and history.

Understanding Our Area: People and Places is a cross-community project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme Understanding Our Area, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). It is also supported by the Executive Office NI and the Department for Rural and Community Development. This project was delivered by Abarta Heritage on behalf of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Museum Services. The project was a real labour of love, and a true pleasure as we got to explore these incredible places and meet so many inspirational communities and individuals who generously contributed to the report.
