Explore medieval marvels with this Audio Guide tour of the historic town of Kilmallock

This free audio guide will delve through centuries of Kilmallock’s history, from its foundation in around 600 AD by St. Mocheallóg, to the arrival of the Normans who built the town walls and gates, and through the medieval period when Kilmallock became the seat of the Desmond Earls and one of the principal towns in the province of Munster.  Many of the ancient sites that you will encounter during your journey around the town, such as the Dominican Priory, the Stone Mansion and the Collegiate Church, date from this period. Kilmallock was the centre of rebellions, conflict and conquest during the turbulent years from the late 1500s to the late 1600s and the town was raided, burned and pillaged on numerous occasions.

As a result, Kilmallock went into decline from the 1700s onwards and its magnificent buildings fell into ruin.  Indeed one commentator who visited Kilmallock in 1777 to refer to it as “the Irish Baalbec”, a comparison to a magnificent Roman site in modern-day Lebanon.  Following the Cromwellian conquest a new Protestant ascendancy class became dominant.  Poverty was widespread and the Workhouse was the scene of much hardship during the Great Famine. The town experienced a revival in the late 1800s which led to the emergence of new industry, commerce and architecture.  In addition, Kilmallock was central to many events during the struggle for Irish Independence, particularly during the Fenian Rising in 1867, the Irish War of Independence from 1919 to 1921.  As we travel around the town and listen to this guide, you will also travel across centuries of Irish history and heritage.
