There is often little time for young people to spend time in the outdoors and in the natural environment around where they live. We believe that a love of the natural environment, instilled at a young age, can provide an endless source of enjoyment, comfort and curiosity throughout a lifetime.
That’s why we were delighted to undertake this project, aimed at Transition Year Students in Co. Tipperary, for South Tipperary Development CLG and the Dept. of Rural & Community Development.
The aim of the project was to encourage the students to explore the heritage trails in the surrounding landscape and to document the natural, cultural and built features that they encountered along the trail.
The students were encouraged to work in groups, to think creatively, to work with a range of media and to document and present their findings. The 24-page handbook we produced for the project set out the methods that the students could employ to achieve their objectives and highlighted further useful information resources. We also produced four teachers’ handbooks with information on each trail and advice on how to best engage students with the available resources.
