Wicklow Uplands Council approached Abarta Heritage seeking our services in identifying the heritage along three walking trails within County Wicklow and to undertake brochure design to promote the heritage trails.

The team initially undertook a visit to the trail areas to get a good understanding of the natural and built heritage in the area of each trail. We also took photographs of the beautiful surrounding landscape and the surrounding heritage sites for use in the brochure design. Our researcher also examined the historical and geographical records to ensure that all relevant interesting information was included.

Our copywriter then distilled the information gathered into easy-to-read and engaging copy. Using the latest GIS software, we produced accurate maps of each area which our graphic designer overlaid with attractive graphics. Referencing the colours from the photographs taken on site, our designer then brought the text, images and map for each trail together in three attractive, A4 gate-fold layouts.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

With a lot of information to convey in this double sided A4 brochure, we had to ensure the text was succinct as well as engaging and that the map icons were clear and easily legible.

Man looking out to sea - Ground Research for Wicklow Brochure Design

The team visited Wicklow Uplands to investigate the area, locate sites of interest and decide on the best course for each trail. The area and its stories were thoroughly researched in both local and national sources. As the project manager, Roisin developed a work schedule and assigned tasks to team members for the duration of the project.

As the itineraries were being produced for direct download from the web and to be brought outside by walkers. We decided on an A4 gatefold format which allows an A4 sheet to be folded into a smaller, more manageable size. Additionally, when opened, the large map could then be used to place the heritage sites of interest in their exact location.
