The Adopt a Monument Manual Wins an Award!
The Adopt a Monument Manual, written and compiled by Róisín, Neil and Conor of Abarta Heritage has been selected for a prestigious award by the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland (IHAI).
The awards took place on Wednesday 14th March 2018, at a function at the ESB Head Office Gateway hosted by Jim Dollard, the Executive Director Business Services Centre & Electric Ireland. It was a great night, and we were delighted to attend. The Annual IHAI Awards are sponsored by the ESB, and consist of four categories. The Adopt a Monument Manual was selected for the Mary Mulvihill Media Award. We are particularly proud to have been chosen for this award, as Mary Mulvihill was a real inspiration, as she was a passionate and visionary exponent of heritage and science, who pioneered engaging ways to communicate the story of Ireland’s heritage and science to the general public. Mary was an important part of the IHAI, and we are truly honoured and grateful that the group have chosen the manual for this award.
There were a number of awards presented on the night, and it made it all the more special to be included alongside these wonderful projects and inspirational individuals who do so much for industrial heritage in Ireland.
The Mary Mulvihill Media Award – Winner: The Adopt a Monument Manual; the Heritage Council and Abarta Heritage.
The Special Recognition Award – Winner: Restoration of the Newry Canal by The Newry & Portadown Branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI)
The Best Museum / Industrial Heritage Site Award – Winner: Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum
Lifetime Achievement Award – Winner: Dr. Colin Rynne (UCC).
The Adopt a Monument Manual was written by Róisín Burke, Neil Jackman and Conor Ryan of Abarta Heritage, and edited by Ian Doyle of the Heritage Council, with help and support from Pauline Gleeson of the National Monuments Service (Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht). The manual aims to provide a framework and guidance to community groups who wish to actively engage with their heritage. It is available as a free digital PDF publication from here.
