Explore the medieval marvels along the Carlingford Heritage Trail
Take a self-guided tour with the Carlingford Heritage Trail Audio Guide to help you explore one of Ireland’s most historic towns
This audio guide will lead you on a self guided tour around this charming heritage town, to discover many of the stories that hide around every corner. Located in the north-east of Ireland, nestled between Slieve Foy and the majestic beauty of the Mourne Mountains, Carlingford is an atmospheric town that still retains its medieval character. This region features prominently in Ireland’s great epic, An Táin Bó Cuailagne, the ‘Cattle Raid of Cooley’. This ancient tale set in the distant and legendary past, tells the story of Queen Medb of Connacht and her husband Ailill, who plot to steal the magnificent Brown Bull of Cooley from Ulster, but find themselves against a mighty foe in the young warrior Cú Chulainn.
For many periods throughout its history, Carlingford has been both a frontier and a crossroads. The cold waters of the lough that provide access deep into south-east Ulster, have made Carlingford a strategic place for centuries. As we tour around we will travel back in time to hear tales from the town’s past.
