Description

A Colourful Exploration of Early Medieval Art!

Ireland’s high crosses are some of the most stunning expressions of early Christian art found anywhere in Europe. One of the finest of these can be found at Monasterboice in County Louth. This is Muiredach’s High Cross (also known as the South Cross). It is one of three high crosses located at Monasterboice and it is thought to date to the early 10th century. The South Cross is commonly known as Muiredach’s cross because of an inscription that translates to “a prayer for Muiredach who had this cross made”.  This may refer to an abbot of Monasterboice by the name of Muiredach who died in 924 AD. You can find more about the incredible high crosses of Monasterboice in Neil’s guidebook to Ireland’s Ancient East, or on the free Discover Boyne Valley audioguide.

This Muiredach’s high cross colouring book page was created using the principles of archaeological illustration.

Archaeological illustration while a sub-discipline of archaeology, is also a strand of scientific illustration. Integral to both is the combined skills of observation and interpretation. A skilled illustrator will be able to both pick out the detail of the subject to be illustrated but also to possess the knowledge to interpret the information and transfer this to a page. This accessible visual format conveys the the information so can be understood and appreciated by a broad audience.  The colouring page was created using these principles, by studying the subject and then drawing it. As this particular drawing is intended for colouring in page and not a full technical illustration, some small artistic details have been added to enhance the colouring book experience.

This illustration was drawn by Sara Nylund of Abarta Heritage. Sara is an archaeological illustrator and graphics artist of twenty years experience. Sara’s main expertise is in archaeological illustration and visualisations of the past for the general public. Her wide-ranging work has encompassed both the private and public sectors, and included commercial as well as research projects. You can find more samples of Sara’s fantastic work on her own website.
